WAVVES

When they released the frantic King of the Beach in 2010, which despite not being their first album, was the work that put them on the musical map, Wavves were pure zeitgeist. The Black Lips had paved the way, like an older brother, for a whole generation of slacker punk bands, Pitchfork would find any excuse to talk about No Age or Harlem, Vice had its own label to release youthful rock with the right balance between fun and danger, and Jay Reatard had risen to mythical status after his death.

The ripple effect of all this even reached the Iberian Peninsula with bands like Mujeres, Modernos (members of Capitão Fausto), The Parrots or Cave Story, spreading garage party vibes. In this context, Wavves explained themselves: Nathan Williams’ project was undoubtedly a product of its time. Fifteen years later, not only has the landscape around Wavves changed, but also the spirit of the group itself. That’s life: they’ve evolved from punk adolescence to power-pop maturity that takes shape in Spun, their new album, their first release since 2021.
