Pedrinho Xalé emigrated from Santiago Island to Lisbon at 18, a year before the revolution. He co-founded Afrika Star, whose first album “Câ Nhôs Dam Gravata” was released in 1976. Taking on keyboards – organs and synthesizers – and vocals, he recorded his solo album “Aleluia” in 1979. In the following decade, he produced two more albums: “Nhõs Dêxa De Conta Mentira” and “Nhõs No Dêxa de Estupidês”. Pedrinho proved to be a brilliant composer, orchestrator, and instrumentalist, freely blending Cape Verdean popular music with fresh trends from reggae and Anglo-Saxon pop culture. Combining organizational persistence with self-sufficient talent in writing and performance, these were fruitful years of concerts and community engagement.
